Thank
you for your interest in directing a show for the 80th season at Little Theatre on the Bay (LTOB) at
The Liberty Theatre. This page outlines the director selection process
and allows you to apply to direct. If you have any questions, please
don’t hesitate to contact our Creative Committee Head, Kristina, at
kriswrite@aol.com or (541) 337-4696.
Who Can Apply to Direct
Anyone may apply to
direct a play or musical or LTOB. All applications are read by the Creative
Committee, who make recommendations to the LTOB Board. The Board makes
the final decision about what shows go into each season.
Please
note that directors should not cast themselves in any show they propose. While
occasionally emergencies happen and directors may need to step into a role at
the last moment, directors must make every effort to fill all roles with
performers other than themselves.
Choosing a Show to Submit
You are
invited to submit up to three different shows for consideration. If submitting
more than one show, we recommend choosing shows that are different in genre,
cast size, etc. While we don't want pre-cast shows, it's helpful for directors
to have an idea that they could cast the show they are proposing with the local
talent we have, so please bear in mind our local talent.
Whenever
thinking about shows to submit, it’s important for directors to consider name
recognition and genre. The truth is that larger, recognizable musicals draw the
biggest audiences in our area. For plays, mysteries – especially if they are
comedies – are also very popular in our area. Serious plays that the average
citizen doesn’t recognize are least attended.
This
does not mean every show must fall into these categories; in fact, LTOB strives
to provide a balanced season with at least one show that is lesser-known or
stretches our audiences. However, for the sake of everyone, including directors
and casts, we want all our shows to be well-attended.
With
that in mind, our season ideally contains these categories, with popular or
recognizable titles given some preference:
* At
least one larger musical
* At
least one smaller musical
* Ideally,
one show (outside of our children’s summer program) that includes children in
the cast
* Ideally,
one Christmas show (which will run around Thanksgiving time, before Christmas
Opry) or Halloween show.
* At
least one comedy.
* Ideally,
at least one mystery.
* And
ideally, at least one drama.
Finally,
this packet includes a list of shows the Creative Committee thinks would be a
great fit for LTOB. Feel free to apply to direct any of these shows, but also
know that choosing one of these shows is not a guarantee that the Board will
approve your submission. Also, we are absolutely open to shows not on
the list.
PLEASE
NOTE: Two shows have already been selected for the 2027-28 season: The
mystery/comedy Baskerville by Ken Ludwig and the musical Les
Miserables.
Season Selection Process
The
Creative Committee is made up of people with a range of theatre experience,
community tastes, and a desire to continue to see LTOB thrive. The committee
will make its suggestions to the Board based on the following:
*
Director's experience and skills. We’re a volunteer organization, so in
addition to some necessary experience in theatre, we seek directors who work
well with other volunteers. Also, if more than one director proposes the same
show, we'll use the criteria outlined in this packet to determine which
director will be assigned that show.
* Show
submission form. This is your chance to show us your passion and vision! This
form also helps us determine if the show you're proposing is right for our
theatre.
* Appeal
to local audiences. As outlined above, we need shows that appeal to local
patrons.
* The
material. We aim to have a varied season. In addition, we must consider whether
the requirements of the show (set and costumes, local actors needed to perform,
etc.) are something we think are practical for our theatre.
Thank
you for applying!
