Honor Band Day is a public service of the Wayne State University Department of Music. There is no participation fee.
The Middle School Honor Band will be conducted by Joseph Dobos, instructor of Instrumental Music Education at WSU. In addition to Mr. Dobos, we are pleased announce that Shelley Schwarderer-Roland will be the special guest conductor of the Middle School Band. There cannot be a more respected nor beloved music educator than Shelley Roland. We are honored to have her with us! Music to be performed will include Her Majesty’s Brigade by Randall Standridge, Whirlwinds by Jodi Blackshaw,Five Good Nature Variations by Pierre LaPlante, and Spoon River by Percy Grainger. Membership in the Middle School Honor Band is for band students in Grades 7-8.
Selection of participants in the Honor Bands will be based on the recommendation and assessment of their band director. Directors can nominate up to 7 students comprised up of 3 woodwind students, 3 brass students, and 1 percussion student (who should be proficient on several percussion instruments.) Please use your alto saxophone nominations sparingly.
Mr. Rais will submit as many students as he can. Since he is an alumni, he has had in past many of our students participate more than the min. allowed.
*Due to how early in the year this is, Mr. Rais wouldn't recommend unless you can play Bb scale, Eb scale, and understand whole to 8th note rhythms. Usually the honors day for WSU is later in the year. There will also be Bowling Green State Univ. and Detroit Symphony Orchestra honors day later in the year and Solo and Ensemble.
