Preference will be given to YSE students in the Urban Specialization and second year students. Students should have taken at least one class or have prior professional/research/volunteer experience in any of the following: urban planning, community development,  community engagement, environmental justice, building energy modeling, LEED, life-cycle assessments and/or environmental due diligence.  Applicants will be selected and assigned to clinic project roles based on interest, past experience, coursework, skills and responses to this application.

Student roles in client-based  Housing Connecticut Clinic

YSE students will join a team of Architecture, Management and Law students on three real-life affordable housing development projects with non-profit and municipal clients. All students have key design team and consultant roles on the project teams, providing the client with a well designed, sustainable and fundable predevelopment proposals. Some of the areas that YSE students may lead in include:

1.  Policy: Environmental land use regulation and planning analysis - reviewing municipal climate action, resiliency and development plans, environmental protection laws, zoning, energy and building codes and providing syntheses to the project team.

2. Building Technical Assistance: sustainable and regenerative building practices - researching best practices, developing case studies and advising the project team; conducting life-cycle analysis and preliminary benchmarking (such as LEED) to inform the project design; working with finance team to match energy incentive programs.

3. Land Use Technical Assistance: green infrastructure - designing stormwater and urban heat island mitigation, urban forests and habitats; researching local regulations and Low Impact Development best practices; conducting site capacity analysis to inform project design.

This is a clinical course with real clients, project teams and deadlines for deliverables. Your full participation is key for the success of the design team and project deliverables.  Please note that this class meets on Friday morning when YSE holds Professional Skill Modules (PSMs) and other programming. Please check your schedule and confirm you do not have any conflicts.
