Application: 2019 Citizen Science Urban Heat Island Mapping Campaign
Thanks for your interest in running a Citizen Science Urban Heat Island Mapping Campaign! This note is to solicit your interest and capacity to work with our team, which includes CAPA Strategies, LLC (https://capastrategies.com/), the Science Museum of Virginia (https://www.smv.org/), NOAA Climate Program Office (https://cpo.noaa.gov/), and the National Integrated Heat Health Information System (https://toolkit.climate.gov/nihhis/).

Your responses to the following questions will help us select the municipalities that will benefit most from our co-investment in the effort. We anticipate more interest than we have financial capacity to support.

We anticipate reviewing all responses and selecting cities for matching support based on the likelihood that they can: (1) develop strategic community partnerships; (2) create a community event; and (3) implement resilience-building actions based on the campaign's results.

Applications for support are due by 5 PM EST on Friday, May 31, 2019.

We anticipate announcing the recipients of co-investment in your campaign by Friday, June 7.

1. Please enter your name and the city where you intend to run a campaign.
2. Do you have an existing map of Urban Heat Islands (UHI) for your city? Note that an existing map does not disqualify your city from receiving support.
Clear selection
3. If a UHI map for your city already exists, briefly describe when and how it was produced, including if it shows air temperature or land/skin surface temperature. If available, include a URL where the map can be viewed. Write N/A if your city does not have a UHI map.
4. What are your goals for conducting a UHI campaign in your region? How might having access to heat maps help you address your community's current issues (e.g. land use planning, health issues, urban forestry, education and/or engagement, etc.)? Please limit to 100 words.
5. What is the approximate total area (in square miles) a UHI campaign in your region would cover?
6. Realistically, how many municipalities do you anticipate will participate in your proposed 2019 heat campaign? (if known, list the city names and their approximate populations).
7. Describe the potential major partnerships you could develop or have developed to support a heat campaign in your region (for example: environmental and/or climate justice organizations, science and technology centers, university partners, etc.). For each group you list, please characterize the current status of your partnership (for example: you plan to approach them, you've received verbal confirmation of their intent to partner, you have a formal commitment of volunteer time and/or funding from them). Next to each partner please state whether they are potential or confirmed in participating.
8. In what ways do you anticipate your effort can support participants and/or volunteers of the campaign?
9. Considering that conducting a UHI mapping campaign with CAPA costs around $15,000 -- depending on the area covered, number of people involved, and data processing time -- do you need financial support? If so, please provide a description of your financial capacity, and all in-kind support that you can provide (Please limit to 300 words).
10. Is there additional information you'd like to share regarding your plans for a UHI mapping campaign? Please be brief.
