The Hamilton County/City of Chattanooga Crisis Intervention Team is presenting a 40-hour school for officers wishing to join the Crisis Intervention Team, who are willing and able to respond to crisis calls in their jurisdiction, and participate in future Crisis Intervention Team advanced training and activities. This training is designed to provide participants with a combination of improved understanding of mental illness and cognitive crisis as well as improved communication skills.  

Training format includes classroom lecture, site visits to treatment facilities and group homes to interact with people who have lived experience, and scenario-based training. Course instructors include professionals from various sectors who are top subject matter experts in their field, experienced CIT Officers, and esteemed individuals within the community. Participants should expect intense training with nearly thirty instructors, many of whom are Masters or Doctorate level.  The instructors represent more than twenty healthcare and service providing agencies as well as two law enforcement agencies.  Each instructor volunteers their valuable time, which serves as a testament to their broad support of this program.

This training is being offered at NO COST TO STUDENTS and is supported by Hamilton County and City of Chattanooga governments, Crisis Intervention Team Connect and other private sponsors.

The outcome desired is to develop an officer or deputy with a much better understanding of mental illness and cognitive disease, which often results in behavioral changes towards individuals who may be in crisis due to illness.

The training is open to all ranks (a deviation from previous requirements) so long as the individual that applies is likely to respond to calls for service or have official interaction involving someone in crisis. Interested officers or deputies, regardless of agency, must submit an application and supervisor evaluation (attached) to be considered for the training. Members of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office or Chattanooga Police Department must also apply for this school as specialized training. In order to be classified as a CIT Officer, CPD Officers and HCSO Deputies must successfully complete the school and be selected by an interview panel. The CPD and HCSO interviews will be scheduled after the CIT School is complete. HCSO Deputies must additionally submit through chain of command a request for specialized training form. Participation will be limited to ensure sufficient practical training for each student. Students Selections will be made by the CIT Management Committee with the goal of maximizing the number of officers available to answer calls for service involving individuals in crisis.
