The pandemic underscored important flaws in our current medical device repair environment -- and as we recover, it's time to fix those flaws. Manufacturers too often restrict access to necessary repair materials like parts, manuals, service keys and software tools to only their technicians, the result of which reduces competition by effectively precluding hospital clinical engineering departments and independent service organizations (ISOs) from making many repairs on medical equipment.
Repair restrictions make it harder for hospitals to keep equipment running and deliver the care patients require. Medical Right to Repair would require manufacturers to make necessary repair materials including manuals, parts and software keys on fair and reasonable terms.
