Thank you for your interest in becoming a YBM mentor. As you know, a
career at the Bar is incredibly competitive so your willingness to give back is
enormously appreciated not only by us but also this year's applicants.
By way of background, set up this mentoring scheme
two years ago because we believe that the best advice scholarship/pupillage
applicants can get is from those who have just gone through the process (and
succeeded). We realised that there is no current mentor scheme run
exclusively by recently successful applicants.
We are therefore looking for the following mentors:
- Those who secured GDL scholarships at one of the
Inns of Court in the last 4 years.
- Those who secured Bar Course scholarships at one
of the Inns of Court in the last 4 years.
- Those who secured pupillage in the last 4 years.
Our reasoning for seeking such recent applicants
as our mentors is because the application process is constantly changing
(particularly through pupillage gateway) and our advice needs to be up-to-date.
The expectation, if you choose to volunteer as a
mentor, is that you agree to:
- Mentor at least 1 mentee throughout the 2023-2024 application year (but willingness to mentor more is much appreciated);
- Be contacted about matters relating to Young Bar
Mentoring; and
- Promote any of our wider activities.
More about our expectations can be found in our
mission statement here - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FhpeCvtmjNZ6ZsYc-r00ds1XWL9ZoPHF/view?usp=sharing
We would be grateful if you can kindly fill in
this google form as soon as possible. We will be in touch in due course to
allocate mentees.
Best wishes,
Nick Leah and Roseanna Cawthray Stern (Founders of
Young Bar Mentoring)
Zara Yusuf and Gordana Balac (Young Bar Mentoring Co-ordinators,
2023-2024)
