Participants will tour four different UW-Madison labs meeting scientists that work in them and doing hands-on projects. They will also learn about 5-7 other science fields through a "Scientist Reception."
BioTrek Workshop - Forensic Science Investigation: Alien Blood
The Alien Blood crime scene investigation is a time-tested activity that engages students in the act of empirical science through use of standard molecular biology tools and techniques that include micropipettes and gel electrophoresis. There are eight different scenarios so that students will need to use the evidence that they see in their group gel to make a decision whether to convict a suspect, or not. Students will learn the basics of DNA migration using a simulation that is safe to touch and handle.
Chemistry Workshop - Energizing Art: Draw Using Electricity
Explore how chemical energy can be converted into electrical energy!
Chemical Engineering Workshop- Renewable Energy Workshop: Batteries
Researchers at UW–Madison are developing new chemical materials to store and transmit energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar. In this workshop, students will explore how energy can be stored in chemicals by building a battery using everyday materials.
Materials Research Science and Engineering Center Workshop - Manipulating materials to Engineer their Properties
In engineering, it's important to choose a material that has the right properties for the job you want it to do. The properties a material has depends upon what atoms the material contains, how the atoms are arranged and how the material is made or manufactured. In this hands-on lab, students will manipulate different materials to change their properties, test and make observations about those changes to help understand how scientists and engineers can alter a material to fit their needs!
