Please consider signing on to this letter asking the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to proactively take action to reduce all road user deaths, and specifically deaths of bicyclists and motorcyclists, in its programs and rules on vehicle safety.
NHTSA is far behind other countries in taking cyclist and motorcyclist safety seriously. Within the last two years, NHTSA has failed to include these users in two New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) requests for comment, Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) rules, and truck sideguard rules. Continuing to ignore and minimize these deaths, either by excluding them entirely from consideration or by vaguely saying they will be addressed in the future, is unacceptable.
This letter asks Secretary Buttigieg to have NHTSA to catch up with European and Asian nations by including bicyclist and motorcyclist AEB in the NCAP (their 5-star rating system) and to revise their cost benefit analysis of truck side underride guards to include vulnerable road users and motorcyclists.
