Region D Housing Plan-Partner Input

Housing Needs Assessment Update-Which year do you think the Housing Needs Assessment update should occur? (The current needs assessment runs through 2027).

Below is the recommendation on timing from Bowen:
ESRI (demographics) data comes out each June, so I would commission a housing study right around that time. Unless there was something compelling or time-sensitive, I would wait until 2027 to commission an update, it would give the markets more time to evolve and maybe give us a better picture of housing/demographics/economics after the influences of decisions made in Washington DC and following the 2026 mid-terms.

Below are the 4 priority goals for Region D.  Please review the goals and answer the questions that follow.

Preventing and Ending Homelessness
Provide stability for people who experience homelessness or housing
instability.
Primary Goal: Increase access to stable and affordable quality
housing options for households with extremely low incomes.


Housing Ecosystem
The agencies, organizations, staff, volunteers, programs, services, data
systems, and financing that develop, maintain, and provide support to those
needing assistance with housing.

Primary Goal: Increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the housing ecosystem by enhancing collaboration on housing among state agencies, philanthropy, local governments, Tribal Nations, education, and the wide variety of private-sector organizations that make up the housing ecosystem.

Housing Stock

Improve the quantity, quality, and placement of Michigan’s housing stock. 

Primary Goal: Expand the use of equitable and holistic local planning and zoning practices to increase housing supply.

Primary Goal: Increase the supply of the full spectrum of housing, including workforce housing and missing middle that is affordable, accessible, and attainable to Michigan residents.
