In the year that has followed the groundbreaking constitutional expression of the human right to food, questions have been raised by individuals, the media, and state legislators in Maine regarding the purpose and implication of a right to food amendment. Since the time that the right to food was enshrined in the Declaration of Rights in the Constitution of the State of Maine, it has become increasingly clear that an educational manual would be of benefit to more fully articulate what this newly protected right entails.
In order to include your diverse voices and valuable ideas in an educational resource for both the peoples of the state and policymakers, please take a moment to respond to any or all of the following questions.

As a reminder and for your information, the constitutional amendment reads as follows:
Constitution, Art. I, §25: All individuals have a natural, inherent and unalienable right to food, including the right to save and exchange seeds and the right to grow, raise, harvest, produce and consume the food of their own choosing for their own nourishment, sustenance, bodily health and well-being, as long as an individual does not commit trespassing, theft, poaching or other abuses of private property rights, public lands or natural resources in the harvesting, production or acquisition of food.
