NIHR Evidence Synthesis Programme - Priority Topics Survey

HSC R&D Division has been asked to submit priority topics to the NIHR Evidence Synthesis Programme (ESP) Evidence Synthesis | NIHR. If you wish for a topic to be considered please complete all fields in the below from. Please note that the HSC R&D Division are not responsible for the final selection of topics chosen by the NIHR ESP.

The NIHR Evidence Synthesis Programme (ESP) has commissioned nine evidence synthesis groups (ESGs) who are available to undertake all forms of evidence synthesis across health and social care topics. Collectively, groups have capacity to deliver up to 45 research projects per year.

These groups will carry out projects requested directly by stakeholders such as public health and social care providers (including NHS trusts), patient communities and members of the public. Other projects will be identified through NIHR processes. This can involve the ESP programme working closely with policy makers to make sure that chosen evidence syntheses address policy and practice needs.

An important advantage of directing research questions to ESP is speed and efficiency as topics can be allocated to ESGs without the need for a lengthy commissioning process. ESGs have been selected competitively based on methodological competence and breadth and depth of experience, providing assurance of high-quality outputs. ESGs have committed to working with stakeholders to refine research questions and ensure that projects meet their needs.

Any type of evidence synthesis project identified through NIHR topic identification and prioritization routes can be referred to ESP. This includes systematic reviews, scoping reviews, rapid reviews, living reviews, meta-analyses, network meta-analyses, individual participant data meta-analyses, evidence mapping, health economic evaluation and decision modeling.

Suitable topics will include those that would previously have been identified as appropriate for HTA programme commissioned research, where the substantive component of the required research is evidence synthesis or economic modeling[1].

[1] Although ESG projects will include stakeholder engagement and can involve components of linked primary research (such as a survey of practice that feeds directly into a synthesis or decision model) multi-component research projects including only a minor element of synthesis remain best placed with the HTA programme.

1. What is the suggested research question?

·Please indicate the research question to be answered through an evidence synthesis.

·If possible, please outline a tightly defined ‘PICO’ (population, intervention, comparator, outcome). This is especially helpful for questions concerning health or social care technologies.

·If known, what is the proposed evidence synthesis methodology? – for example, a systematic review with or without economic analysis; rapid review; scoping review; evidence map; living review; etc.

·Please list any relevant existing and/or ongoing research in this area.

*

2. Why is the suggested research important?

·Please provide a brief explanation and background indicating why the suggested research is important and from where the evidence synthesis suggestion has emerged.

· If applicable, please include the policy relevance and what decisions the evidence will support.

· What difference will it make having the evidence make to patients and carers, the public, and/or the NHS and social care workforce and services? Benefits might be health-related, economic, or both.

· What will the impact be if this research is not undertaken?

3. Deadline or timescales for completion

When would the findings of the evidence synthesis need to be available, in order for them to be useful? – is there a hard (or soft) deadline? Please try to be realistic in indicating desired timescales.

4. Patient and public involvement

·Have you had any input from patients, carers, and/or members of public in developing this research suggestion? [Yes/No]

·If yes, please briefly describe the input.

5. Geographical scope

The suggested evidence synthesis should primarily inform healthcare and public health services or policy in the UK (i.e. be of relevance to the NHS or social care delivery in England and the devolved nations). However, what might be the value of the work beyond the UK? – for example beyond Europe or in low- and middle-income countries?

6. Impact on health inequalities

Please describe the potential of the suggested evidence synthesis to reduce health inequalities, if applicable.

7. Additional information

Is there any other information that would be helpful for the NIHR to be aware of when considering this request and prioritising/allocating the suggested evidence synthesis work?
