Application for The UMF Peace Corps Prep Certificate Program

The UMF Peace Corps Prep certificate program — the first in the state — is a partnership between UMF and the US Peace Corps

Open to all students in all majors, the program will give you a competitive edge in applying to serve as a Peace Corps volunteer - if that’s where your path takes you after graduation - enhance your resume for whatever career path you plan to follow after graduate, and become a better global citizen.

This is form is to be completed in consultation with the PC Prep Coordinator and will guide your completion of the requirements for the Peace Corps Prep certificate.

1. Work Sector: Leveraging concrete knowledge and skills is central to on-the-ground international development work. Through the PC Prep program, you will begin to build a professional specialty that can further your career goals whether or not you become a Peace Corps Volunteer.

For PC Prep, you will need to complete at least 3 courses that align with a specific work sector. (They can but do not need to come from your academic major or minor). You also must accumulate a min. of 50 hours of volunteer or work experience in that same sector.
 
Which sector do you plan to focus on to complete your Peace Corps Certificate?

1a. Coursework. List the number and name of 3 courses related to your proposed work sector that you plan to take, and the semester in which you plan to take them. It is fine if you’ve already taken them. [EDU 125 Becoming a Teacher - Fall 2025]

1b. Hands-on experience in your proposed work sector. Describe what you plan to do. It can be a single or multiple activities but they must total at least 50 hours. You can have some or all of the activity(s) completed prior to application as long as it was during your UMF college career.

2. Foreign language skills: Requirements depend upon the desired Peace Corps volunteer placement site

(1) Latin America/ Spanish-speaking countries: two 200-level courses. 

(2) West Africa/ French-speaking countries: one 200-level course in any Romance Language. 

(3) Everywhere else: no explicit requirements, but language skills are an advantage when applying to the Peace Corps.

2a. World Language Courses or Experience (optional):  If you plan to include world languages in your PC Prep program, what are the two highest courses you plan to take, and/or describe your alternative learning process (e.g., heritage language).  Be sure to include years in High School as well as college courses. This is optional so you may state "no world language background."

List the core course and two approved electives you plan to take. You can alternatively include 1-2 cross-cultural experiences in place of 1-2 of the electives. [EG: ANT 275 Gender, Sexuality and Society - Fall 2025]
