SCIVIS is a special week at Space Camp in Huntsville Alabama. It’s a 6 day/night exciting experiential learning adventure. Space, Science and Aviation curriculum is presented and teamwork is a key component during simulated space/aviation missions. All program materials are available to students in braille (English or UEB braille, both contracted and uncontracted), large print, and electronic magnification also is available. Students also are encouraged to bring their own hand-held assistive technology devices. Many areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) also are addressed throughout the camp. Since 1990, over 4000 students from the U. S. and many foreign countries have attended SCIVIS. For many of those students it has been the highlight of their school year. Comments like, “this is the best week of my school year” and “at SCIVIS I don’t have to explain my visual impairment to people because everyone there gets it”, are heard all the time. This year will be year 29 for SCIVIS. In 2017, approximately 210 students from 23 U. S. states, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Greece, Ireland, India, Israel, and South Africa attended the program.
Students interested in applying MUST have the ability to read, speak and understand English with fluency. Additionally, the ability to quickly learn new technology will be required.
Depending on the program chosen, students ages 15-18 may participate in activities such as SCUBA diving in 21-foot Underwater Astronaut Trainer tank, climbing a 49 foot rock climbing wall, zip lining and other high ropes elements. Please do not apply if you are not willing to try new things.
