The Kuṃbha Melā is one of the world's largest, oldest, and most significant cultural and spiritual gatherings, deeply rooted in Hindu tradition and cosmology. Historically, Kumbha Mela has been a site of intellectual and religious exchange, with ascetics, scholars, and laypersons participating in its various rituals, making it a living embodiment of Hindu philosophical and ritual traditions.
The Mela takes place in four rotating locations—Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain—where millions of people congregate to perform ritualistic bathing in sacred rivers. Mahā-kuṃbha Melā is organised once in 12 years at Prayagraj—on the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers. The next Maha Kumbha Mela is scheduled in January 2025
The Oxford Sanskrit Text Society is organising a study trip to Prayagraj Mahā-kuṃbha for scholars, students, and enthusiasts of Hindu philosophy and texts. The study trip would include:
1. Study of Indian spiritual tradition and Hindu philosophy
2. Workshops on Yoga.
3. Reading of Sanskrit texts led by Prof. Diwakar Acharya, Spalding professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at the University of Oxford.
4. Cultural immersion with the practitioners.
5. Spoken Sanskrit classes
6. Group reflection sessions
