Help amplify the voices of islanders and coastal communities!
Hello! I’m currently working with Greenpeace on a campaign to create a high seas ocean sanctuary in the Sargasso Sea, and to remind nations leaders to bring the UN Global Ocean Treaty into force. This groundbreaking treaty would allow, for the first time, the creation of a network of ocean sanctuaries on the high seas, but it needs 60 countries to sign it into law first.
Many of us who live in subnational island jurisdictions (SNIJs) and are on the frontlines of environmental change. Yet, we have no direct representation at the United Nations and no formal role in the implementation of this treaty or the creation of high seas sanctuaries.
What is a Subnational Island Jurisdiction (SNIJ)?
An SNIJ is a non-sovereign, populated island territory that possesses some degree of autonomy while remaining in partnership with a parent state. SNIJs often have their own unique identity, language, and culture that is distinctly different from that of the parent country. Many are former colonies, and while some may move toward independence, others have chosen to maintain a special relationship with their parent state.
We are inviting diverse voices from SNIJs world wide to join a global solidarity video with one powerful call:
🎙️ “Sign the UN Global Ocean Treaty into law now, and include us in the process of creating high seas sanctuaries.”
If you are interested in being part of the video, please fill out the form below and if selected we will follow up with guidance and a short script.
Thank you,
