This year, we're incredibly excited that our chapter voted overwhelmingly to support electoral organizing as a priority and endorsed several candidates as well as a ballot initiative.

Each of these campaigns is facing strong opposition from corporations, lobbying groups, and moneyed interests. But with your help, we know that socialist candidates and initiatives with an organized, people-powered movement behind them can win. Our chapter members have knocked on more than 115,000 doors and made more than 61,000 phone calls to voters since 2017. We’ve successfully helped elect candidates as part of progressive and labor coalitions in Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. Our endorsed candidates have gone on to fight for legislation to expand public housing, increase taxes on the rich, cap insulin prices, repeal anti-union “right to work” laws, create social wealth funds, ban revolving-door lobbying, close corporate tax loopholes, create a universal basic income, expose confidential police records, end for-profit migrant detention across the state, and more.

Our *highest* priority—and where DSA historically has had the strongest impact—is contacting voters through canvassing. This is because in-person conversations with voters are proven to be one of the most important and effective tools to reach and persuade voters and ensure that they turn out on Election Day. However, there are several ways for everyone to contribute, including but not limited to phone banking, research, communications, and administrative support. Finally, you do not have to be a member of DSA to join our canvasses and other activities. We are open to anyone interested in volunteering and would love to have you!

You don't have to be a resident of the candidate's specific district to help out! In the past, D.C. volunteers have traveled out to Maryland and Virginia to knock doors, and vice versa. This will just help us get a sense of where most of our volunteers are located and can help us coordinate carpools.

Fundraising activities to the extent we are legally allowed under campaign finance law in MD and D.C. (helping plan fundraisers, researching/identifying potential donors, soliciting donations, etc.)

Writing postcards to voters (postcards supplied by the campaign)

Communications (drafting emails, texts, tweets, etc.), research, or video or graphic design support

In-Person Canvassing and Outreach

We take public health and individuals' safety incredibly seriously; understanding that conditions will continue to change throughout the pandemic, our organizers will work with each campaign to assess the risks associated with canvassing, continue to follow local health department and national CDC guidance, and adjust our approach as needed. For now—for our safety and the safety of the voters we come into contact with—we are asking that in-person volunteers are vaccinated (ideally boosted), and everyone regardless of vaccination status will be required to wear a face mask.
