Joint Statement by Queen’s Palestine Solidarity Groups on the Situation in Palestine

Joint Statement by Queen’s Palestine Solidarity Groups on the Situation in Palestine

All Queen’s Palestinian Solidarity groups collectively condemn the tragic loss of innocent lives among both Palestinians and Israelis.

With Queen's University’s support of Indigenous people of Turtle Island and their pursuit of decolonization and Indigenization, we demand to see their efforts consistent with practice. We call on Queen's to realize decolonization and Indigenization are not simply academic theories and are a rightful practice of Indigenous peoples across the world. We call on Queen's University to acknowledge the Palestinians colonial history.

The "Statement on Situation in the Middle East" by Principal Dean on October 8th fails to recognize Israel’s apartheid against Palestine, the 56 years of occupation, and 75 years of displacement Palestinans have faced.

Violence doesn’t occur in a vacuum. Since its inception, the state of Israel has faced countless accusations of war crimes and has been condemned by over 87 countries at the United Nations. The current situation between the river and the sea amounts to apartheid, plain and simple, with Palestinians regularly subjected to military checkpoints, land seizures, arbitrary detentions, targeted killings by both the military and extremist settlers, and enforced family separation. To be Palestinian for the last 75 years has meant living in a system that seeks to erase your history and identity.

Israel's very existence relies on the continuous and structural threat of violence against those who dream to uphold their right of return under Article 13(2) of the UDHR. What is currently happening in Historic Palestine is a product of the 15 year imprisonment of Palestinians in Gaza. Gaza is described by human rights experts as an "open-air prison” and akin to "hell on earth”. Palestinians in Gaza have been living under a blockade by Israel since 2007– Israel restricts the import of food, medical supplies, power, and free movement.

In a recent statement, Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, referred to Palestinians as “human animals” and subsequently severed essential supplies to Gaza, including electricity, fuel, food, and water. Even before this, 95% of Gaza's water was already undrinkable. It is crucial to underscore that over 50% of Gaza's population comprises children under the age of 18. Such actions constitute collective punishment and are in clear violation of Article 13 of the Geneva Convention

We call on Queen's University to take a stand against Israeli occupation, colonialism and apartheid, and call on the administration to foster a safe space for Palestinians, Arabs, and their allies, for both students and faculty. We must continue to educate and mobilize support to end the 75 years of injustice that Palestinians have endured.

We would also like to emphasize that our vision for the future of Palestinians is a life marked by liberty and freedom on their ancestral lands, in a nation that champions democracy and upholds its laws to safeguard the presence of Muslim, Christians, Jewish, and Druze alike.

If you share these concerns and want to urge Queen’s University to take a stance against Israeli occupation, colonialism and apartheid, we encourage you to add your name to this joint statement.

Due to safety concerns, we have adopted the use of initials to safeguard the identities of signatories to ensure all are comfortable in endorsing our calls for change
