The issue of missing people in Mexico remains a very pressing issue. The National Search Commission documented approximately 12,000 new cases in 2023 which contributed to the total of almost 115,000 missing peoples reported between 1962 and 2023. Family members are searching for their loved ones despite facing huge risks which include their enforced disappearances, violence, and intimidation. A notable case was that of the 43 missing students from Ayotzinapa, Guerrero state in 2014. There is speculation pointing towards the involvement of Mexican military forces in the enforced disappearances. Despite all of this, the president still expresses support for the military (oftentimes siding with it instead of the victims). Additionally, there has been controversy surrounding the execu
tive branch's reduction of the official number of disappeared persons between 1962 and August 2023.
