Uncle Joe's Recruitment Application 2017
Thank you for your interest in Uncle Joe’s! We are a student-run peer counseling and resource center located in the storefront below Gregg Residence Hall. Uncle Joe’s provides a confidential outlet for students wishing to discuss personal problems, including topics such as campus adjustment, grief, intimate partner violence, and suicide. We are open for walk-in visits from 10 pm to 1 am every night and are available by phone 24/7.

We are now searching for compassionate and enthusiastic undergraduate students to become a part of our organization. Please fill out the application by September 25, 2017 at 11:59 PM. The application process also includes both an individual and a potential group interview. Members of the Uncle Joe’s recruitment committee will contact you about a week after the application deadline to set up an individual interview. Following the individual interviews, the recruitment committee will deliberate to decide which applicants will move on to group interviews. These interviews will take place Saturday, November 4th and Sunday, November 5th. Should you move on to group interviews, you will select which day you are available to interview.

Training will be held in the spring semester and will provide trainees with the necessary skills to be effective resources for the Washington University community. Training meetings will be held on nine Saturdays from 10 am to 6 pm and eleven Tuesdays from 7 pm to 10 pm. Trainees will receive over 100 hours of training, and attendance at all training sessions is mandatory in order to become an active member of Uncle Joe’s. Following training, all members of Uncle Joe's are required to be active members for two semesters (though not necessarily the two semesters immediately following training or two semesters in a row). As an active member, you will be responsible for sitting duties in our office, holding the pager for 24-hour periods, attending weekly general body meetings, and participating in other Uncle Joe's events. Please take these commitments into consideration when completing your application.

We would like to stress that your application will be held in complete confidentiality. The result of your interviews will not be discussed with anyone unless they are directly involved in the recruitment process. We encourage you to be as honest as possible.

As recruitment directors, we, Heather Shams and Jeanette Freiberg, have no say or influence in the selection process. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact us at unclejoesrecruitment@gmail.com (or individually if you wish) and we’ll be glad to help.

Thank you for your interest!

Your answer
Imagine that you are an Uncle Joe's counselor. A student comes into the office and tells you that her parents are getting a divorce. She says it is a long time coming, but she still can't believe it's actually happening. She has a 9-year-old sister that she is worried about but she can't talk to either of her parents about her concerns because she doesn't want to "pick sides." Her friends here at Wash U don't really understand what she is going through, which is why she came into the office. Please describe how you would handle this interaction. (1-2 paragraphs)
