[Zoom Talk] Confronting and communicating COVID-19 in Taiwan
By taking a health communication perspective, Dr. Mei-Ling Hsu will address the crucial factors contributing to the controlled epidemic of COVID-19 in Taiwan. Dr. Hsu will particularly highlight the uniqueness of the health care system, policies concerning resource requisition, societal surveillance, the practice of digital social innovation, as well as the social construction of face masks and mask-wearing in the Taiwanese setting. Complexities and problems evolving from border control, a debate over mass testing, and strategies to boost nationalism in the prevention campaign will also be discussed.

Speaker: Prof. Mei-Ling Hsu (PhD, Communication, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor) is a Distinguished Professor of Communication at National Chengchi University, Taiwan. She had been Director for the College of Communication’s Research and Development Center, Convener for the College of Communication’s MA concentration in Science and Risk Communication, and Associate Vice President for International Cooperation at the same university. She had been on Fulbright Visiting Scholar grants to Harvard School of Public Health and Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and twice a Visiting Scholar to the School of Journalism and Communication, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Hsu has researched widely in health and environmental risk communication. She has published two books, more than 70 English and Chinese journal articles and book chapters on health communication and environmental communication as well as in her other areas of interest, which include political communication, persuasion, journalism studies, and gender in media. Her most endeavored research effort in health communication is in HIV/AIDS and communication. Her book “AIDS and the Media” has won her the Tseng Hsu-pai Journalism Research Award in 2002.
