Wheatsville Co-op: Boycott Eden Foods, Support Workers' Access to Health Care!
We need 500 signatures by August 1st! Only verified Wheatsville owner-members will count towards getting the boycott on Wheatsville's next election ballot in September.

Unfortunately, non-owners cannot participate, but we encourage all concerned customers to voice their opposition through email and in the store.

This petition was created by concerned member-owners. For any questions, please contact Shelby Alexander: salexan.1990@gmail.com

Why Boycott Eden Foods?
Wheatsville Food Co-Op’s mission is to “create a self-reliant, self-empowering community of people that will grow and promote a transformation of society toward cooperation, justice, and non-exploitation.” With this in mind, we are asking Wheatsville’s leadership and owners to end the store’s affiliation with Eden Foods and Eden Organic.

Many people are familiar with the recent Supreme Court ruling in the Hobby Lobby case, which ruled in favor of for-profit corporations over their workers’ individual rights to obtain access to health care. Eden Foods is another entity who seeks to undermine workers’ access to birth control. Several media outlets including Salon.com have covered Eden’s lawsuit which sought to exempt itself to cover birth control in its employees’ health insurance plans.

By signing this petition we are speaking out against companies who actively use its profits to control the bodies of its workers, and are requesting that a Co-Op vote be placed on the ballot to officially boycott all Eden Foods products.

If Wheatsville’s board and its owners seek to create a "society toward cooperation, justice, and non-exploitation,” then permanently removing Eden Foods as supplier until they change their position is a step in the right direction to remain true to that mission.

Wheatsville Bylaws
According to the bylaws, Wheatsville management boycotts products or producers only when a boycott is supported by a majority of its owners. The Wheatsville Bylaws outline the process for petitioning to get a proposal on the ballot.

Section 3.3.3 Petitions. Any matter that the owners wish to put before the ownership via a Co-op Vote may be placed on the ballot by a petition signed by at least 500 or five percent (5%) of the total number of owners in good standing, whichever is fewer. Proposals initiated by such a petition shall be included in the next regularly scheduled Co-op Vote, except that if a petition is signed by at least 1,000 or ten percent (10%) of the total number of owners in good standing, whichever is fewer, then the Co-op Vote shall be scheduled to commence no sooner than thirty days and no later than 60 days from the date the petition is submitted.
