Personal Protective Equipment Supplies for Healthcare Providers - Ottawa & Surrounds
We are a group of medical students from the University of Ottawa reaching out to you for support of our front-line healthcare providers as we collectively face the COVID-19 pandemic. Especially in these rapidly evolving and tumultuous times, we have come to realize the importance of community and each person playing their part in this fight, now more than ever. Each day, behind the scenes, our doctors and nurses screen and test a growing number of patients in both family health clinics and screening centres across the country. In hospitals, emergency and intensive care physicians care for critical COVID-19 cases/patients?, adding onto their already near-capacity number of critically ill patients. Still other community health care providers visit private, long term care, and retirement housing to read older persons who are most at risk. All these health care providers return home late at night and leave early the next morning. All these health care providers put themselves at risk so we as a community can stay safe.
In these desperate times, there is a growing shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) that is used to keep our front-line workers safe. As hospitals and clinics prepare to handle an increase in the number of COVID-19 related cases, we only need to turn on the news to find physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers lacking basic but essential PPE (
). As they do their jobs and the rest of us do ours in maintaining proper hand hygiene and social distancing, we can also contribute in other ways to show them our support. They are our last defence.
Therefore, we are reaching out to our community as YOU may be able to help us help them. Similarly to our fellow medical student colleagues in other city centres such as Toronto, Kingston, and London, we are reaching out to businesses, vendors, and industry partners who may have PPE available to donate to our hospitals and front-line healthcare professionals.
We are specifically asking DENTAL and VETERINARY OFFICES, NAIL SALONS, CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES, and LABORATORIES for donations including surgical masks, N95 masks, gloves, gowns, hand sanitizer, face shields, goggles, feet/head coverings, disinfectants wipes, and universal transfer media certified viral swab kits.
These supplies are being picked up by a large group of medical student volunteers and supplied directly to health care services with complete oversight. We are actively working with the local physician groups as well as the University to ensure that resources are allocated equitably and transparently.
Please kindly consider donating. In these uncertain times, please stay safe and cherish the time with your loved ones. Thank you for your consideration!
