The New Jersey Science Community Supports a Constitutional Right to A Clean and Healthy Environment for all New Jersey’s residents, including future generations.

Dear Members of the New Jersey State Legislature,

We urge you to vote in favor of the New Jersey Green Amendment. As scientists, researchers, and science practitioners who work and live in this state, we study a variety of topics relative to New Jersey’s environment, including the impacts of various pollutants, development activity, climate change, etc., upon human, societal, and ecosystem vitality and function. We create sophisticated models based upon our best, most comprehensive understandings of these systems in an attempt to predict how threats may impact future generations here in New Jersey and beyond. What we cannot do is ensure that our research is seriously considered and our conclusions implemented into the state’s decisionmaking processes to address the vast array of environmental challenges that science has now revealed to us. This is in the hands of you, and the officials at every level of government and society for the State of New Jersey.  

It is our belief that the New Jersey Green Amendment presents the foundation on which our state legislators can stand in order to make the most effective, morally and economically responsible, and equitable solutions to the current and future challenges that science portends surrounding New Jersey’s climate and environment.  

As dedicated members of New Jersey’s science community, we believe that the Green Amendment, codifying in constitutional law the right of all the people of New Jersey to clean air, pure water,  and a healthy environment, will go a long way toward strengthening the government’s authority in protecting the people’s environmental rights and promoting the longevity of healthy environments for present and future generations of New Jersey. The Green Amendment will ensure the best available science is used to take meaningful steps towards preventing pollution, protecting our environment, taking meaningful steps towards leaving a better environment behind for future generations.  

Please vote YES on the New Jersey Green Amendment and send it to the voters for our approval.
