7th May 2019 - Tuberculosis and Latent TB Awareness
The aim of the training is to build knowledge and awareness about Tuberculosis (TB) and latent TB across a number of organisations in Harrow, and give our organisations the necessary skills and support to carry this knowledge to the wider community. If you attend this course, you will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

TB Alert is currently working with Harrow CCG in partnership with NHS England and Public Health England, to raise knowledge and awareness of latent TB, and thus increase the uptake of latent TB screening among those eligible. By getting more people screened for latent TB, we will reduce the risk of people becoming unwell with tuberculosis and reduce the spread of TB within our communities.

Tuberculosis kills more people worldwide than any other infectious disease. It is especially common in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Everyone coming to the UK on a long-term visa is screened by x-ray to check that they are not unwell with active TB.

However, even if their x-ray is clear, which means they do not have active TB, there is still a risk that they are one of the 1 in 4 people worldwide that have latent TB. Latent TB is when the TB bacteria are inside your body, but they are asleep. If you have latent TB you will not feel unwell, and you cannot pass TB onto others. However, there is a 1 in 10 chance that the TB bacteria will “wake up” and become active in the future, causing illness and putting others at risk of infection.

People who have migrated to the UK from countries with high levels of TB are at higher risk of being infected with latent TB. This means they are also more at risk of becoming unwell with active TB in the future. This can affect their job, family or studies. But a simple blood test can detect the latent TB bacteria and a course of antibiotics can treat it, so that they do not become unwell with TB in the future.

TB Alert, Voluntary Action Harrow, and Harrow CCG are reaching out to organisations who work with recent migrants to provide training and raise knowledge and awareness of the latent TB screening and treatment that is available for those who meet the eligibility criteria. Those eligible for the test will have entered the UK in the past five years from a country with a high rate of TB, and they will be aged 16-35. Any organisation that works with individuals who are eligible for this programme are an important link in spreading awareness of what latent TB is, and helping to signpost people to if they decide they would like to be tested.

Training will include:

· The global impact of TB
· The local TB picture
· The symptoms, transmission and treatment of active TB
· What we mean by latent TB and how people can be tested and treated for latent TB, and
· How your organisation can share what you have learned with others

The final part of the workshop will be a brainstorming session to identify how tuberculosis awareness and prevention can be integrated with the different activities of your organisations.
