As residents of New Hanover County, we the undersigned denounce white supremacy and its devastating impact in our region and across the country. We call on our elected officials and public servants to do the same by condemning the attack on our Nation’s capitol that occurred on January 6th, 2021. As the site of the first and only successful white supremacist coup in American history, our city and its leaders have a unique responsibility to speak up in this moment. This includes the City of Wilmington Government, New Hanover County Government, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department, Wilmington Police Department, and our Congressional representatives, who we are requesting issue public statements regarding their stance in response to this assault on democracy and threat to our nation’s republic.
