2020 NextGen Regional Internship Program
The NextGen Regional Internship Program provides a paid internship experience to youth and young adults ages 16-21. Prior to entering the internship, participants will attend up to 30 hours of required jobs skills and workplace readiness training lead by career coaches and working professionals.

Program Requirements:

-Applicants must reside in Chesapeake, VA, Norfolk, VA or Portsmouth, VA.
-Applicants must be able to commit to attend the required 30 hours of unpaid training prior to beginning the internship.
-Applicants must be able to commit to be in town and available to work a minimum of 20 hours a week, every week, between July 1, 2020-September 1, 2020.
-Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States of America.

Space is limited in this program.

Priority Will Be Given to Youth with One or More of the Following Barriers:
a. Recipient of Free or Reduced Lunch
b. Offender
c. Homeless
d. Foster Care
e. Pregnant or Parenting
f. Disability
g. Human Trafficking Survivor
h. Mental Health

Application Process
Stage One: Application, January 2, 2020 - March 9, 2020

The Application will be open from January 3, 2020 - March 9, 2020. Applications must be submitted no later than 11:59 pm on March 9, 2020. Late applications will not be considered.

Completed applications MUST include the following:
-Online application
-Resume and personal statement (see application for details) emailed to nextgen@vcwhamptonroads.org

Stage Two: Interviews, March 16, 2020 - April 30, 2020
Interview locations will be announced no later than March 1, 2020.

Applicants interviewed will be required to bring documentation of:
-Locality of residence
-Right to work (if not a US citizen)
-Barrier(s) selected in the application.

Interviewees will be provided with a list of approved documents for verification when they are selected for the interview.

Applicants interested in positions that are with a City agency will be required to complete additional documentation during the interview process through the City’s Human Resources Department. Instructions for this process will be included with the interview confirmation.

Stage Three: Selection, April 15, 2020 - April 30, 2020

All offers of enrollment in the NextGen Regional Summer Internship Program will be made by 11:59 pm on May 5, 2020. Interns will be required to provide hiring documents including picture id and social security card. It is highly advised that applicants make sure they have access to these items prior to April 30, 2020.

Direct Deposit is required for all NextGen Interns. If you need assistance with establishing a bank account please let us know.

Stage Four: The required workplace readiness training for those selected to become NextGen Interns working with Summer Camps, College Students, or Interns that were previously apart of the program will receive training on one of the following dates: June 6, 2020, OR June 13, 2020.

All other positions will select one of the two following training weeks:
June 15 - June 19
June 22 - June 26

Stage Five: Internship, July 1, 2020- September 1, 2020

Interns will have 180 hours to work between July 1, 2020- September 1, 2020. They may work up to 20 hours per week unless additional hours are approved by the NextGen Internship Program Director. Schedules will be created at the discretion of the site supervisor.

NOTE: Summer Camp positions will begin June 15, 2020 and end by August 20, 2020.
