We welcome resident and community help and support as we partner with each other to work toward a more equitable and inclusive West Orange township for all residents. The Human Relations Commission (HRC) prioritizes six objectives that benefit West Orange residents:

● Represent the community in matters regarding racial equity.
● Ensure all West Orange residents feel represented, affirmed, validated and valued.
● Promote and seek out diverse perspectives and experiences for program development.
● Provide diversity, equity and inclusion educational opportunities for residents and town officials.
● Communicate with town government officials and the West Orange Police Department to address community concerns related to diversity, equity and inclusion matters..
● Engage the Board of Education in discussions to promote racial equity and equity of all forms in the school system.

Please check areas of interest. You will be working with Commissioners on subcommittees to ensure these HRC goals are met. There are also "General" volunteer opportunities as noted below.

Implement monthly chats with residents to better learn community needs related to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Develop monthly dialogue programs to engage residents across difference; building bridges in West Orange.

Improve HRC community outreach strategies via social media, township news, email or other outlets. Including honoring heritage groups each month.

Review and revise processes applicable to contract awards (to ensure a diverse vendor pool is considered), HRC commissioner and committee appointments and term limits, township employee pay equity, staff hiring and training.

Events- The HRC hosts many events throughout the year including international flag raisings, MLK Day, outdoor events.

Translation Services- Looking for people to translate educational and promotional materials into Spanish, primarily, but other languages, as needed.
