56th International Physics Olympiad - Team Guide Application Form

All applicants must be over 18 years old.

The Colombian Scientific Olympiads Office of the Universidad Antonio Nariño is preparing to host the 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in 2026, with participation from over 100 countries. IPhO 2026 will take place from the 4th-12th of July 2026 in Bucaramanga Colombia.

This Olympiad, regarded as the most prestigious physics competition in the world, aims to evaluate the highest possible level of knowledge, analytical skills, critical thinking, problem-solving ability, and proficiency in both theoretical and experimental physics.

The IPhO is open to bright young scientists from around the globe who are under the age of twenty and are determined to pursue studies in science but have not yet enrolled in a university program. The competition serves as a platform for students to showcase their talent and connect with a global community of physicists.

As part of its initiatives to strengthen excellence in youth education and the national education system, Universidad Antonio Nariño has developed the Colombian Scientific Olympiads Program for more than 44 years, achieving remarkable results in international competitions throughout these four decades.

Part of the responisbilities as the Host Country is finding volunteers to be Team Guides for the participating countries. A Team Guide is responsible for one team of students and it is preferrable the Guide speak the Language of the Country Team, but as this is not always possible, we require the Guide at least be proficient in English.

A Team Guide´s duties are:

Accompany and supervise assigned student participants (under 18) at all times during the Olympiad. Ensure participants’ wellbeing, including checking that they eat properly, rest, and feel comfortable during the event.

- Ensure punctuality by accompanying the team to all official activities — including exams, ceremonies, excursions, and social events — according to the established schedule.

- Assist participants with practical needs such as purchasing food or souvenirs, currency exchange, or handling medical or logistical emergencies.

- Maintain student safety and conduct, ensuring participants do not engage in inappropriate behavior, conflicts, or risky situations with other teams, staff, or the public.

- Stay informed of the daily schedule, event locations, and key contacts (medical staff, security, academic committee, supervisors).

-  Maintain confidentiality regarding exams, participants’ personal information, and internal communications.

- Create a welcoming and respectful environment, fostering a positive experience for all participants through effective and empathetic communication.

- Abide by youth protection guidelines, including never providing alcohol, tobacco, or any substances to minors and ensuring awareness of each participant’s whereabouts at all times.

- Be flexible and willing to assist with extra organizational tasks or support other committees if required.

- Represent the host organization and country with professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and enthusiasm toward international guests.

While the Volunteers will not be remunerated, accomodation and meals will be provided during the Olympiad for Team Guides, and they will receive a Volunteer Certification at the end of IPhO 2026. Applicants must be available for the full duration of the Olympiad and not engaged in work or academic obligations during that period. Applicants must be able to reach Bucaramanga, Colombia by their own means by the 3rd of July, afterwards the Organizers will cover transportation expenses during the Olympiad between the event sites.
