We are storytellers.

Our words and images reflect the soul of the human experience. Our work builds bridges to magical universes and opens doors to boundless possibilities. Our stories entertain, inspire, and challenge readers to be brave and find truths in the world and within themselves. Sometimes our stories save lives.

We don't have to imagine a day when the government silences our voices. The systematic targeting, attacking, and erasure of our work by Republican lawmakers is creeping across the country, as they attempt to enact book bans nationwide. In 2023 alone, 4,240 book titles were targeted for censorship, while there were 1,247 demands made to censor library books, materials, and resources. 

What’s happening now is hurting creators, especially those who have struggled for generations to secure a space on the shelves.

It is hurting teachers and librarians, who don’t feel safe sharing books with their students. It is hurting young readers today–and in each successive class–who will see their libraries dwindling, their families deemed suppressible, and their identities invalidated with each book banned and library shuttered.

And it is hurting young readers, who are just beginning to see themselves on the page, who deserve to encounter challenging ideas, expand their empathy and build their sense of self-worth. Partisan school boards and extremist activists are stealing their freedom to thrive.

We're not going back to a place where only a chosen few stories are allowed through the gates. We're not going back to laws that silence creative expression and policies that hurt people for being who they are. We will defend the freedom to read.

We are answering the call to do something.

We're knocking on doors, making phone calls, writing letters and posts, and registering voters. We stand with Vice President Harris, who said, "We want to ban assault weapons and they want to ban books." We support Governor Walz, who said, “While other states were banning books from their schools, we were banishing hunger from ours.” 

We will continue to use our words, our images, and our voices to tell the story of America. We will rally together with joy and community on November 5th. 

We are storytellers. And it is our great honor to endorse Kamala Harris and Tim Walz as the next president and vice president of the United States of America. 

Let's finish this chapter once and for all.
