This training teaches effective skills for witnesses to assess, de-escalate, and diffuse a problematic situation. This practice session focuses on situations when an individual appears to be acting out of substance use intoxication and how to assess possible responses. An active bystander is someone who not only witnesses a situation but takes steps to speak up or step in to keep a situation from escalating or to disrupt a problematic situation. Situations specific to the use of alcohol, stimulants, opioids, and hallucinogens will be discussed and explored.
This is an interactive, participatory practice session.
Learning Objectives· Understand the spectrum of substance use.
· Recognize the signs and symptoms of crises related to substance use categories: Alcohol, Stimulants, Opioids, Hallucinogens
· Identify bystander approaches to intervention
· Discuss limitations of supporting others in use crises

Facilitators:
Sal Corbin (he/him) offers training in Active Bystander Intervention, Restorative Justice, Unarmed Civilian Protection and conflict mediation. He worked for 15 years in academia as a Psychology Professor before transitioning to nonprofit work. He has done Workforce Development training and program management and is a Training Coordinator for the Behavioral Health System of Baltimore. His vision is to help others build and maintain healthy relationships, with conflict transformation as the primary focus. His extensive background in leadership facilitation supports his efforts to keep showing up and sharing. Sal holds advanced degrees in Clinical (M.S.) and Educational (PhD) psychology.
