LWYS 2020-21 Season

UPDATE: WE WILL BE MEETING IN PERSON!!!!! Late Registration will be accepted until September 22nd

Dear LWYS,

We are able to meet in person starting this Saturday!!! When you registered, the registration form stated that we would meet back in person when it was possible. Well now it is possible!

If you are not comfortable with in-person rehearsals, please email me ASAP. If there is a need I would love to Zoom the rehearsals at the same time 🙂

Our extra-large rehearsal room allows for 30 seated students when spaced 6 feet apart. Our remaining spots will be filled on a first come first serve basis.

Here are the precautions/procedures:
All musicians and parents during drop off must be masked following social distancing rules.
Drop off is at the outside band/orchestra room door.
Only students will be allowed in the building
Everyone will have to use hand sanitizer upon arrival
You must complete the online COVID checklist before your child arrives. They will not be let in if you have not completed this. A link will be sent out later this week
A COVID waiver will be emailed out and posted on the website later this week. This must be turned in before or at your child's first rehearsal.
Chairs and music stands will be disinfected in between each orchestra.
A "stick of truth" has measured all chair/desk distances for all L-W classrooms. We will using this set-up, and will be sitting 6 feet apart, masked, with one stand for each child. NO ONE CAN MOVE A CHAIR OR STAND.
Our schedule will go back to our traditional schedule now that we can meet in-person. If we have to go remote again, the remote schedule will resume for our ZOOM rehearsals.

Remote Zoom Schedule: Beginning 9:00-9:45; Cadet 9:45-10:30; Concert 10:30-11:15; Chamber 11:15-11:45

In-Person Schedule: Beginning 8:30-9:10; Cadet 9:15-10:25; Concert 10:30-11:45; Chamber 11:45-12:15

Tuition - As stated on the registration form, the maximum increase due to payment of rental fees for in person rehearsing will be $50 for September-January, bringing us back to the original tuition rate. This will be collected at a later date - after the space has been actually used. Please be respectful of this, as I do not want to charge this if things change quickly again.

If you did not sign-up because our rehearsals were only online, registration will remain open. Of course there is a chance of us having to go remote again. No refunds will be given for going remote, but instruction will continue over Zoom. Again, more details and all needed forms will be emailed out later this week.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Freeland

The Orchestra

The ORCHESTRA is made up of four string instruments, the violin, viola, cello, and string bass. By signing up for Lincoln-Way Youth Strings, you can choose which one you would like to play.

The VIOLIN is the smallest member if the string orchestra. It has the highest sound. It is known for its brilliant tone quality. There are more violins in the orchestra than any other instrument. They are divided into two sections, the first and second violins. Like all stringed instruments, there are different sizes to for different sizes of students.

The VIOLA looks like the violin, but it is slightly larger. The instrument produces a lower sound. The tone quality is rich and mellow, sounding less bright than the violin. The viola is held under the chin like the violin. Good violists are always in demand in small and large performing groups.

The CELLO has a beautiful tone, which gives the orchestra a rich, full sound. It is tuned an octave lower and is much larger than the violin or viola. The cello, along with the string bass produces the bottom sound of the orchestra. The instrument is supported by a long endpin that rests on the floor and the player always sits to play it.

The STRING BASS has a deep, dark sound, which gives the orchestra a solid foundation. It is a versatile instrument, which can be used in a variety of groups, ranging from the symphony to the jazz combo. Many bass players also learn to play the electric bass! The bass is the largest member of the string family and it can be played sitting or standing.
