The Floyd County Schools Middle School Honors Program is an educational choice that prepares middle school students for the rigor of high school and college work.  Students will be presented with the discipline of pre-Advanced Placement (AP) classes along with enhanced learning experiences focusing on critical thinking skills, research work, experiential learning, and service learning.

The Honors Preparatory (HP) Program incorporates high standards for teaching and learning that were developed specifically for this program.  The program is designed for students who have demonstrated above average academic ability, motivation, and interest for further advanced post-secondary study and will prepare students for the challenge and rigor of high school and college courses.
***This is NOT a pull-out program but an Advanced Content delivery model. Honors classes meet every day, students may have four honors classes a day. 9th Grade Literature, Algebra I and Physical Science offered in the 8th grade will count as high school CORE credit.
Students residing within the Floyd County School district will receive priority consideration for admission into the program.  However, a limited number of out-of-district students will be accepted based on merit and available space.

The deadline for submission of completed application is  March 11, 2022. Applications should be completed and turned in online via google forms.

I understand that if I am accepted into the Middle School Honors Program, I will be
expected to adhere to high standards and expectations.  These expectations include, but
are not limited to:

Working responsibly in class and adhering to rules.

Maintain a grade of 80 or higher in gifted/honors education classes.

Being on time for class daily with appropriate work materials.

Maintaining good attendance.

Turning assignments in on time.

Produce quality work, sharing work in a variety of ways, asking questions for clarification and understanding, and

Following the Honors Continuation Criteria and being monitored each nine weeks
              for success in the Honors Program.

My student’s transcript records may be used to screen for admission to the Honors Program.

If selected, I approve of my student’s enrollment into the Honors Program, and I understand the rigorous requirements of the program.

I further commit to attendance at the appropriate student and parent meetings so that I will clearly understand the benefits of such a program.

I understand that there may be summer and/or holiday assignments that are vital components of the instruction.  I am aware that failure to complete these assignments to a satisfactory standard can be detrimental to my child’s learning

Application Process and Continuation Criteria for Middle School Honors Program

Apply to the Program
Applications are available to 5th graders.  Students must complete the application on time and participate in all aspects of the entrance process.
Transfer students may enroll in classes if space is available, but must complete the application process during their first year in Floyd County Schools to be accepted in the program.  All requirements must be met regardless of the year of entry.  A committee will evaluate the transcripts and application to determine if a transfer student will be eligible for the Middle School Honors Program.
Students not accepted into the Honors program in 5th grade, may re-apply at the end of the year in  6th and 7th grade for re-evaluation into the program.
There is a limited number of slots for the program.

Continuation
Once accepted in the Honors Program, a student must do each of the following to continue in the program:

Maintain a grade of 80 or higher in gifted/honors education classes (including advanced content and cluster classes). (An “F” in one course—removal from the program, a “C” in one course—probation, the second C-removal.) This will be evaluated at the end of 9 week grading period.
Meet all the elements of the Middle School Honors coursework and project criteria for each honors class.

Teacher Recommendations
Please ask 3 teachers to complete a recommendation for you for the honors program. These must be your 5th grade teachers. 4th grade teachers are acceptable if you do not have 3 5th grade teachers. Must be CORE Content- ELA, Math, Social Studies and Science.
