Please note that the program requires you to send at least 3 letters and a small cultural package throughout the year. You must have reliable access to the internet and be able to respond to email communications at least biweekly.
Classrooms participating in the Books as Bridges program will have a Cultural Literacy Lesson. These lessons include a presentation, hands-on activity relative to the pen-pal country, and an opportunity to try tradtional food from their partner country. Lessons are created and presented by the Books as Bridges Coordinator.
Local classrooms are also expected to complete a small service project. Projects can include, but are not limited to, book drives, fundraisers, or cultural fairs. The BAB Coordinator will provide more information about this during the program.
Additonally, please be aware that our classrooms abroad occasionally undergo circumstances that render them unable to send letters or packages for weeks at a time. Please plan accordingly and be understanding throughout the process – we recommend that you use these obstacles as a teaching tool. Because our book recipients are in developing countries, we cannot guarantee that your partner school will be able to reciprocate the amount or timeliness of the packages you send. Again, please be understanding.
