ESY Peer Volunteers
The Unionville-Chadds Ford School District offers an extended school year program, referred to as ESY, for students with disabilities served by Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) who need instruction over the summer. This summer, ESY will run from June 26 through August 8 (seven weeks, 24 days), Monday through Thursday, 8:00am to 12:00pm at Unionville Elementary School. Students who participate in this program have disabilities that require them to receive instruction in academics like reading, writing, and mathematics, but students also have goals in the areas of social skills, sensory skills, and communication skills. Additionally, the program is promoting a different theme each week with a corresponding activity day filled with authentic learning opportunities such as field trips, special visitors, and exciting activities. This summer in order to best support our ESY students’ needs, we are looking for peers of varying school ages to volunteer to participate in ESY for all six of the one-time per week activity days. Research suggests that both students with disabilities and students without disabilities greatly benefit from these inclusive opportunities.
