Text of petition to the Board of Education:

I support the Climate Action Working Group’s calls for a comprehensive district-wide climate action plan with measurable goals. Developing and approving such a plan should be top priority for the Board of Education. As a district, we pride ourselves on valuing social justice and working to provide the best future for our young people. With widespread support for accelerated climate action, and the privilege of access to many resources that other communities do not, we as ICSD should and can take on leadership in the shift toward more sustainable K-12 education. 

I urge you to hire a Sustainability Director for the school district to advise your work and develop the details of a climate action plan. I urge you to pass a resolution or policy of some form by the end of the calendar year that commits the Board of Education to developing and following through on a climate action plan that includes:

• Deadlines for replacing all fossil fuel based boilers with heat pumps or other carbon neutral HVAC systems

• Deadlines for completely electrifying the bus fleet (with milestones to reach along the way)

• Specific goals to reduce GHG emissions and energy use by a certain percentage by certain year

• Plans and deadlines for renewable energy

• Plans to receive community input and for a transparent method of keeping track of progress

• Plans for climate education, on-campus native plant restoration, and other projects as determined by the school community, district Sustainability Director, and Board of Ed
