We demand that Government include in the ongoing copyright reform three key issues that are most needed to meet our interests in creating the next generation of South African content for the world:
The right to create. Current law lacks many modern exceptions to exclusive control of copyrights over input that we need to make original work.
The right to own. Current law makes the payer for any work -- be they government or corporation -- the owner of our art, which blocks its re-use.
The right to earn. Current law allows collective management monopolies to charge others for our work and claim to “represent” us, without any power of us to act as members in their governance and without adequate government oversight.
