Don’t Fake It, Make It! - Youth Application Form

Thank you for your interest in Don’t Fake It, Make It! Please read the following information before filling out the application.

Don’t Fake It, Make It! is an eight-week youth entrepreneurship practicum for business product prototyping and production. This project will assist youth (ages 15-30) in building and refining their products in a low-risk environment while gaining knowledge and experience to take the next steps in their entrepreneurial journey.

Eligibility

  • Open to youth ages 15-30 living in the Yellowknife area (including Dettah and Ndilǫ).

  • Youth who have a product-based business idea. (You can also utilize this opportunity to make stuff to support your business idea, e.g. tools, storage equipment, trailers, promotional materials, etc.)

  • Youth do not have to currently be engaged in any education, employment, or training program to be eligible.

  • You do not need an established business.

  • Can meet the project’s commitment expectations (see below).

What to expect during the 8-week practicum

  • Mentorship from local experts.

  • Access to Makerspace YK resources and training.

  • Credits to purchase product materials.

  • Access to a grant writer.

  • Final market to showcase products.

Commitment expectations

  • Must be available to engage in practicum activities between January 28th-March 25th, 2023.

  • Must be available to attend “Welcome Session” on January 28th, 2023.[Edited - January 31st, 2023]

  • Must be available to attend 2 “Required Trainings” on either: January 31st,  February 4th, and February 7th, 2023.

  • Must be available to engage in at least 2hrs of mentorship sessions per week.

  • Must have time to go to Makerspace to work on products (on your own time and when Makerspace YK is open).

  • Must be available to attend a grant writing workshop sometime in March 2023.

  • Must be available for the Final Market event on March 25th, 2023.

1. APPLICATION AND ASSESSMENT PROCESS

Assessment Criteria:

  • Feasibility of your business product idea. In other words, product must be feasible to make in the Makerspace.

  • Your time commitment to the practicum. Applicants who are able and willing to commit more time than the minimum time requirement will be considered more.

2. MENTORSHIP MATCHING PROCESS

  • Mentors will be matched to youth based on their business product idea.

3. CONFIDENTIALITY AND USE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION

To know more about you, we will need to collect a few pieces of personal information. As part of this work, we ensure the confidentiality of your personal information. Information we collect on your gender identity, pronouns, ethnicity, preferred and legal names is used for legal purposes surrounding record-keeping, project reporting, and for us to address you appropriately.
