Strengthening the St. James Town Act
In 2019, after the fire at 650 Parliament St that resulted from landlord negligence, then NDP MPP Suze Morrison introduced the St. James Town Act. The St. James Town Act would force residential landlords of larger buildings to create a dedicated maintenance fund — something that condos are already required to do. Landlords would not be allowed to raise rents by a higher amount to put money into this fund. The province would set a rate of how much funds must go to this account each year and landlords would be forbidden from raising rents above the guideline as long as there were funds in their maintenance account.

After the electrical fire and critical systems failure at 77 Howard this year, MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam is revisiting this act and asking community members to give feedback on how we can strengthen tenant protections.
