SRI - Faith & Science Foundations Seminars 2022 Application

We welcome your school's application to the Science & Religion Initiative (SRI) Foundations Seminars 2022. These seminars are for helping teachers and administrators at Catholic high schools to bring faith and science into dialogue, based on St. John Paul II's principle that "science can purify religion from error and superstition; religion can purify science from idolatry and false absolutes."

The Foundations Seminars will be offered at two locations: the University of Notre Dame (Sunday June 12 - Friday June 17) and Notre Dame Seminary, New Orleans, LA (Sunday June 19 - Friday June 24). Participants will be placed based on the reviewers' assessment of the particular needs expressed in the application. Foundations Notre Dame will be live streamed and accepts schools who who require online participation. Foundations New Orleans requires on-site participation.

Stipends are $750 per on-site participant and include a certificate for 60 hours of professional development. Stipends are $350 for online participants and include a certificate for 40 hours of professional development.

Participants are asked to cover the cost of their travel. Once at their assigned location, lodging and meals will be provided by SRI for each participant (participants are responsible for their own expenses).

IMPORTANT: Please submit the names of all teachers on your proposed team in one application - we will only accept one application per school. While we do not require a minimum of three teachers from each school - one from biology, physics and/or chemistry, and religion/theology - schools should attempt to produce a team representing these academic subjects. Schools that demonstrate interest and support from their school administration, especially administrative participation in the application process, will be given priority consideration. Administrators are welcome to be included on the proposed team.

Please note that you will also need to submit brief essays to the following three questions which will help us to evaluate your specific needs:

(1) What do you hope to learn and achieve through participating in the seminar? (Note: The program does not directly engage bioethics or environmental ethics.)
(2) Will you be able to implement interdisciplinary engagement between science and religion at your school with faculty and students? (Note: Administrative support is crucial to such an effort.)
(3) Have your teachers worked together in the past to bring science and religion (or other disciplines) into dialogue? If so, how? (Note: This could include any curricular or extracurricular activities, as well as individual faculty or full faculty professional development activities, including (but not limited to) attendance at past SRI seminars and Institute Days.)

THIS FORM DOES NOT SAVE PARTIAL PROGRESS, SO IT IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED THAT THE ESSAY ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS BE CREATED IN A SEPARATE DOCUMENT PRIOR TO BEGINNING THE APPLICATION FORM. This way they can be cut and pasted into the "Participation Goals" section without losing progress.

Thank you for your application!
