Testimonials: Safer Cleaner Energy Campaign
In 2026, the gas utility company Peoples Gas filed a rate hike request with the Illinois Commerce Commission which would increase the average Chicago home heating bills by $10 to $11 per month if the commission approves the increase in full. This filing comes less than a year after regulators ordered Peoples Gas to overhaul its controversial pipe retirement program, which has been chronically over budget and behind schedule. Despite spending billions of dollars on pipe replacement, multiple outside expert reviews have found the program was not improving safety in proportion to the utility’s spending. If we allow this program to continue unchecked, the city will be on the hook for fossil fuel infrastructure into the next century.
