“Rent an American” is a service-learning program focusing on citizen diplomacy and global citizenship.
During the school year, the d.a.i. has been facilitating school visits with U.S.-American guests offering German youth the opportunity to learn more about the United States, its history, and culture through your unique perspective. The view of German students in the U.S. is shaped by their textbooks, the news, pop culture, and social media. It is a two-way street:
You get the chance to get out of your comfort zone, visit and learn more about German culture.
Since 2007 hundreds of U.S.-Americans who have been visiting or living in the Tübingen area have traveled around the state of Baden-Württemberg visiting school classes, even kindergartens, and senior learning circles! They have shared images from back home, answered questions on life in the U.S. as a teenager, holiday traditions, or talked about topics such as gun violence, immigration, or the climate crisis.
“Rent an American” is a fun, low-threshold activity that will help you improve your intercultural communication skills, challenge your views on transatlantic relations and global understanding, and break down stereotypes.
This experience will put a whole new spin on your stay in Germany! It broadens your horizon and network and can be a door opener for personal or professional endeavors.
Become a citizen diplomat today!
All new participants will attend orientation, a day-long workshop
that will cover cross-cultural communication specifics between Germans and Americans. You will learn more about the organizational procedures of the program (matching process, reimbursement of travel expenses, etc.) During orientation, you can connect with other Americans
