The walk home from school has been particularly quiet. You look at your daughter more often than usual and all you see is a little person confronting her mind. You try to make conversation but silence greets you. You think about what you might have forgotten but your brain is silent too. You squeeze her little hand to see if the physical contact will make her react but there is no response. The silence is exhausting.
Empty corridor
You look at the empty corridor at home. That horrible thing you thought would take years to happen has just happened. Your little girl has come home and has wandered off to her room without paying any attention to your offers. She simply didn't say a word and left with a blank stare. You're overcome with a thousand feelings, but amidst the confusion and anger, you peek into her room. Finally, she opens her mouth but what follows is a short explanation of how other children have teased her about her participation in class. You try to say something positive but really you used to do the same thing except you hadn't seen the other side. You don't know how to respond and then comes that exhausting silence.
