A Cappella Retreats 2025 - Welcome!
Hello, I'm Robert, a cappella director and voice coach. Retreats are magical - after running them for years with my own groups, I'm looking to spread the love.

Over 70 unique singers have attended the 9 retreats across 3 seasons so far, and 28 have come more than once. They are all generous, authentic, and as crazy (or as open) as you are for spending a weekend with a bunch of strangers! 

At most of the retreats, we will learn, rehearse, and record a song over the weekend. Each retreat will be 10-14 people, and we will all be contributing to make the weekend a success.

While some fields are marked optional, please do your best to fill out the whole survey. The more information I have, the better the experience for you. Also, filling out the survey does not guarantee placement in a program, but we will do our best to accommodate everyone. 

Some additional details:
  • Cost: $300/day/person* for instruction, housing, and food. Does not include transportation.
  • Location: Somewhere within 2 or 2.5 hours from San Francisco
  • Open to adults only
  • Applications close 3 weeks before the retreat date.

I'll be segmenting people to create groups with balanced experience levels and voice parts. More possible dates increases the chance that I'm able to place you in a suitable group.

And yes - we start on Friday morning, so try your best to take that day off. Please make sure to hold the dates that you express interest in!

Retreat focuses:
  • General Contemporary A Cappella: our classic retreat where we learn, polish, and record a custom arrangement. Available for all levels.
  • Vocal Jazz focus: learn jazz-specific style and technique, and apply that to learning, polishing, and recording a jazz a cappella song. Available for intermediate & advanced singers. 
  • Nor'easters Cover: check this off your a cappella bucket list! Like a classic retreat, except we pick a well-known Nor'easters arrangement from the Shams era. Preference for advanced singers.
  • Singing Technique Deep-dive: learn the science & mechanisms of the voice in interactive learning sessions & discussions. Understand your own voice through experimentation. 1:1, group, and peer coaching on whatever you're working on (solo, background part, or whatever else). Open to all levels. 
  • A Cappella Leadership: focusing on music directors, but also open to other group leaders. Everyone will get a chance to lead, and receive feedback on their leadership from the facilitator(s) (experienced director) and the other participants. We'll also have roundtables on leadership in general, trade best practices, and do some individual planning towards your own pursuits.
