TIME: 10:00 a.m. (Competitors arrive by 9:30 a.m.)
FEE: $50 paid either online via email request for an invoice to be paid by credit card or as one check for all students payable to "ASTA-LA Section," postmarked by Monday, March 11, to ASTA Guitar Competition c/o Kay Pech, POB 1242, Artesia, CA 90702. Any entries paid online or postmarked on March 12 or later must pay $60 fee.
DEADLINE: March 11 so that we can plan the timing of the event.
AGE DIVISIONS (as of March 30, 2019): Elementary (11 and under) Intermediate (12-14) Pre-College (15-18) Young Adult (19-25)
REPERTOIRE: We would prefer two works of contrasting character, one written after 1900, the other before 1900. However, if the contrast is strong and compelling, the dates of composition is not crucial. The duration of both together should not exceed six minutes for the Elementary, eight minutes for Intermediate and Pre-College Divisions, and 10 minutes for the Young Adult Division.
TEACHERS must be an ASTA member. Winners will not be recognized unless the teachers are members.
STATE COMPETITION: This year's (2019) winners as well as next year's winners will be eligible to compete in the California State Competition which will be held in October 2020. Regardless of age now, competitors who are advanced to the state competition will compete in the age division that matches them at that point. The State Competition will have only two age divisions: 18 and under, and 19-25.
LOCATION: MacDonald Hall is in the main Music Building (MUS) on the north side of campus. It is a beautiful hall for guitar and has plenty of room for audience members. For this year, we will have a warm-up room for contestants in MUS 105, and this can be a convening point for parents, teachers and students. The best Google Map address: 840 West 34th Street, Los Angeles, 90089. The map of the USC campus: http://web-app.usc.edu/maps/#upc/
Looking forward to another great competition!Brian Head, CalASTA-LA Guitar Chairclassical.firstname.lastname@example.org
