Important Information About Public Records Requests

Requests must seek existing records; we are not required to create or compile new documents, perform data analysis, explain the purpose or interpret the meaning of existing records, or answer questions.

Under state and federal law, some types of records are typically not public and are therefore exempt from disclosure, including, but not limited to:

Student records (protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, 20 U.S.C. § 1232g, 34 CFR Part 99)
Personnel files beyond permitted fields (pursuant to G.S. § 115C-320)
Security plans and sensitive safety information
Attorney-client privileged communications
Social Security numbers, personal emails, or health records

Certain records may be otherwise exempt or redacted pursuant to G.S. §§ 132-1.1 et seq., 115C-402, or other applicable laws.

Some requests may require additional time due to scope or legal review. If your request involves substantial staff time or extensive use of resources, fees may apply pursuant to G.S. § 132-6.2(b). If fees apply, we will notify you before processing your request.
