Open Lectures on the Avant-garde vocal music with Viktoriia Vitrenko

Within the context of the cross-cultural project "PRESENT PAST" presented by the Goethe Institut, featuring music by Chico Melo and Peter Kerkelov, Viktoriia Vitrenko, a Ukrainian soprano and conductor specializing in contemporary music, is offering a series of lectures and master classes. These educational sessions consist of two parts:

  1. Crash Course on the History of Vocal Music in the 20th and 21st Centuries - 6th Nov, 6pm
  2. Introduction to the Vocal Extended Techniques - 7th Nov, 6pm

These lectures aim to explore avant-garde and experimental classical music from the 20th and 21st centuries. They'll provide a foundational understanding of the genre's history, help participants interpret graphic scores, unveil the broad spectrum of the Extended vocal techniques, and encourage an interest in incorporating this repertoire into vocal practice. These lectures are meant to inspire and prepare attendees for an upcoming master class on [Date] at [Location]. While attending both lectures is recommended, it's not mandatory. These sessions are open to vocal practice students, composers, teachers, and anyone curious about avant-garde vocal music.

During the first lecture, Crash Course on the History of Vocal Music in the 20th and 21st Centuries, we will focus on the chronological development of classical avant-garde music. We will begin with Italian Futurism and European Dada movements, delve into the works of Arnold Schönberg, explore the significant developments in vocal music within war-torn Europe, examine American performance art such as Happening, revisit the experimental phase of vocal music notation in the 1960s and 1980s, and finally, discuss the latest trends in vocal music worldwide.

In our second session, titled Introduction to the Vocal Extended Techniques, we will embark on a fascinating journey through various vocal techniques, excluding BEL CANTO, and explore the realms of Sprechgesang, "white" singing, vocal fry, multiphonics in various forms, the intriguing Strohbass technique, and many more. Additionally, we will delve into the world of innovative music notation, including graphic scores, providing you with the skills to decipher these unique forms of musical representation. This lecture serves as your gateway to the fascinating universe of avant-garde singing techniques, offering a diverse palette of new timbres and expressive ways to infuse into your classical practice.

Our aim is to inspire you to venture into the realm of avant-garde vocal music and, ultimately, to collaborate with me during the hands-on master classes.

Both lectures will be conducted via Zoom in English (recommended language level - B1). Participation is free upon registration. I am very excited to welcome you!
