Describe your motivation for becoming a volunteer teacher of English in Chile. (300-500 words) *
Your answer
As a volunteer teacher of English, you will work with Chilean students of varying, and often very basic, English levels. As a native or near-native speaker of English, you will be focusing on improving students’ listening and speaking abilities. With this in mind, what are some ways in which you could motivate students and foster English language learning in your school community? Please discuss classroom activities, extracurricular activities, materials that you would like to bring from home to use in your classroom, and other ideas to encourage English language learning inside and outside of the classroom. (300-500 words) *
Your answer
Placement Preferences
Please note that the EODP cannot guarantee placements in a particular region and/or city, as eligible schools are chosen by Regional authorities and placements depend heavily on volunteers' compatibility with host families. Also, while your preferences are used to make placements, the EODP cannot guarantee that your preferences will be fulfilled. We ask volunteers to be flexible and to understand that we assign volunteers according to available schools and families.

In the questions below, please indicate your geographic and demographic preferences, marking the order of priority of your preferences. (The "first choice" is what you want most, and the "third choice" is what you want least.)

Do NOT repeat answers (i.e. do not put "urban" as your preference for each choice).

If you have no preference regarding geographical location, or the size of your placement community, please check the box to indicate as such, and leave the First, Second and Third ranking unmarked.

Please keep in mind that the descriptions "Urban", "Midsized", and "Rural" are relative and may not be the same as in your home country.

-------------------------------
For example:

An applicant who ranks their geographical preferences in the order "North, South, Central" and selects "No preference" when it comes to the size of their placement community is indicating that if possible, they would prefer to be placed in the North, no matter the size of the placement community. (This applicant should also be open to living in the South or Central regions, if necessary.)

An applicant who ranks their geographical preferences in the order "South, Central, North" and their size of placement in the order "Midsized, Urban, Rural" is indicating that if possible, they would prefer to be placed in the South, in a midsized town. (This applicant should also be open to living in a rural or urban area in the North or Central regions, if necessary.)

Geographical location
Please check this box if you have no preference regarding geographical location, then proceed to "Size of placement community".
Geographical location: First Choice
Geographical location: Second Choice
Please do not repeat previously marked choices.
Geographical location: Third Choice
Please do not repeat previously marked choices.
Size of placement community
Please check this box if you have no preference regarding the size of your placement community, then proceed to "Living Arrangements".
Size of placement: First Choice
Size of placement: Second Choice
Please do not repeat previously marked choices.
Size of placement: Third Choice
Please do not repeat previously marked choices.
Living Arrangements
Host families come in many different forms. For example, a host family could consist of an older couple whose children have left home, a younger couple with children, a single parent with children, a single person, etc. It is also possible for two or more volunteers from the English Opens Doors Program to live together with the same host family.

Although it is recommended to live with a host family, volunteers may also choose to live independently and receive the living allowance allocated to host families ($200,000 CLP per month in 2020) in addition to the volunteer allowance.

Please be aware that if you choose to live independently (in an apartment or pension, etc.) and receive the living allowance designated for the host family, you will be responsible for assuming any expenses not covered by the living allowance. It is important to note that volunteers in the past who chose to live independently have reported that using their own funds to offset the costs of their accommodations was unavoidable. Having additional savings is a necessity, especially in covering any initial deposits and the first few months of rent. The EODP will provide minimal advice/assistance in finding housing. It will ultimately be the volunteer’s responsibility to finalize their independent living arrangements. Volunteers living independently will not receive advance notice regarding their placement.
Please select your preferred living arrangement *
Are you applying with another person/partner/friend who you would like to be placed near to? *
Please be aware that volunteers applying to be placed near to each other can only be guaranteed to be placed within the same region (not necessarily the same town), unless they choose to live independently.
If you answered "yes" to the previous question, what is this person's full name?
Please be aware that this person will also need to mention your name on their application in order for us to consider the pairing. Additionally, you will both need to mark the same placement preferences (geographical location and size of placement community) in the section above.
Your answer
Host Family Placement Preferences
Please be honest and thorough in identifying items that are important to you, remembering that these preferences may restrict your demographic and geographic placement preferences.

Please keep in mind that volunteers who are vegetarians, have allergies to pets, and/or other needs, will have more limitations on their placement matches than volunteers who have fewer restrictions.

If you indicated that you would prefer to live "independently" in the question above, we ask that you please fill out the host family information anyway in the event that your housing preferences/needs change.

Please be aware that the information provided in this section will not be used to evaluate your application in any way. It is simply a request for information that will allow us to place you with a family whose lifestyle and preferences will coincide well with yours, should you be accepted into the Program.

The EODP will not inform host families about your selections in this section, however the EODP will ensure that the family that you are placed with is compatible in these regards.
Are you a vegetarian? *
Do you have any special dietary needs? Please describe below.
For example, are you vegan or gluten-intolerant? This information is important in finding a host family who can accommodate your needs. However, please be aware that host families are not required to adapt to your special dietary needs. Rather, you will be responsible for any special preparation or costs associated with your diet.
Your answer
Do you smoke? *
Would you be willing to live with a family who smokes inside of their house? *
If possible, would you like us to consider your religious or spiritual beliefs in your placement? *
If you would like to be placed with a like-minded religious family, please specify the religion.
This preference might override your geographic or demographic placement preferences. Please note that many Chileans identify as Catholic, but are non-practicing.
Your answer
If possible, would you like us to consider your sexual orientation when making your placement with a family? *
We will not share this information with your family. Please remember - if you mark "Yes", we will ensure that you will only be placed with a family who stated in their interview that they are open to hosting volunteers of your sexual orientation. Please note that this preference might override your geographic or demographic placement preferences.
If you would like us to consider your sexual orientation when making your placement with a family, please elaborate.
