Response to the UCLA Graduate Student Association's Restrictions on Free Expression and Association
We reject the Graduate Student Association's censorship of organizations at UCLA through arbitrary, private, and restrictive decisions on student fee funding of student events. While the decision was intended to target one specific set of ideas, it sets a dangerous precedent wherein this or any future GSA can, without student input, and in opposition to the First Amendment, ban registered student organizations from participating in organizing public events, and condition funding on the exclusion of such groups. We oppose such motions, irrespective of what groups they target, and urge the GSA to revoke any such policies, formal or informal.
