In accordance with WCS School Board Policy 4.403 and 4.4001, the school library seeks to provide students with materials that offer a wide range of diverse topics, interests, and viewpoints; varied styles; and divergent ability levels to foster student intellect, to enrich aesthetic values, and to enhance critical thinking. Knowing that each family determines the breadth of intellectual freedom allowed within their own household, parents/legal guardians have the ability to review what has been checked out by their child from the library. Should parents/legal guardians wish to limit what their own child may check out from the school library, a parent/legal guardian may request that a limitation be placed on their child’s library account by contacting the school’s library media specialist. Restrictions may be placed ONLY on specific titles. If specific titles are not included in the request, then no restrictions shall be placed. Library media specialists will not decide whether library materials meet the restriction parameters of parents/legal guardians based on genres, themes, or content. Restrictions placed on a student’s library account only limit the ability to check out physical books from the school library; restrictions do not limit material that is part of the classroom library or course curriculum. Any concerns about the curriculum or classroom should be directed to the teacher or principal.
